Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa Emmanuel, popularly known as Mayorkun, has recounted how Afrobeats superstar Davido unexpectedly reached out to him and signed him after two weeks of silence.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Afropolitan podcast, Mayorkun revealed that he had resigned from his banking job after Davido promised to sign him, following a video of him singing that surfaced online.
However, the singer said he became worried when Davido stopped responding to his messages for two weeks, leaving him uncertain about his musical future.
According to Mayorkun, the uncertainty prompted him to seek spiritual intervention as he began attending church and trusting God for a breakthrough.
He recalled that a remarkable moment occurred after he led a praise and worship session in church, when Davido sent him a WhatsApp message asking him to pack his belongings and move into his house.
“Davido stopped replying to me for two weeks after I quit my banking job. I started going to church, and one day, immediately after singing praise and worship, he texted me on WhatsApp to pack my luggage and come to his house. It was more than a testimony,” he said.
The singer explained that the timing of the message left him amazed, noting that he had not even returned to his seat after leading the worship session when the message arrived.
“You may not believe me, but I haven’t even returned to my seat after leading the praise and worship before he messaged. I was on my way to my seat. Before then, I was in panic because I wasn’t sure whether Davido would talk to me again,” he added.
Mayorkun’s account highlights the uncertainty he experienced before getting his breakthrough in the music industry and the role his faith played during that period.
Davido later became instrumental in Mayorkun’s rise to prominence after signing him to his record label, Davido Music Worldwide, D DMW.
