Oyo NUT shuts schools to commence indefinite strike over mass abduction of colleagues, students

The Oyo State wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT has declared an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026.

The directive was issued by the state chairman of the union, Comrade Hassan Fatai, in a statement released on Monday.

Fatai said the action was prompted by the continued captivity of teachers and pupils abducted in the state.

According to the union, the prolonged ordeal of the victims has created fear among teachers and heightened anxiety in affected communities.

The NUT also noted that many parents are now reluctant to send their children to school because of growing security concerns.

The development comes a day after President Bola Tinubu approved the recruitment of 1,000 forest guards and ordered a special rescue operation to secure the release of the abductees.

Despite the federal government’s intervention, the union insisted that more urgent steps must be taken to ensure the safe return of the victims.

“The action is intended to draw the attention of government and security agencies to the urgent need to intensify efforts towards the safe rescue of our colleagues and the pupils still in captivity,” the statement said.
