FG approves pay boost, new benefits for civil servants

The Federal Government has approved an increase in peculiar allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants to improve their take-home pay, Ribs Media reports.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, announced the decision on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja.

She said the reforms were endorsed by the Federal Executive Council as part of efforts to strengthen the public service.

Walson-Jack explained that the review covers workers under both the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure.

According to her, the revised peculiar allowances cut across all grade levels, boosting earnings for both junior and senior officers.

She added that key allowances such as duty tour allowance, estacode, and book allowance have been increased, with nearly all provisions under the Public Service Rules reviewed.

A major feature of the reform is the approval of 100 percent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending approved training programmes.

“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.

The government also introduced a new exit benefit scheme for retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, offering 100 percent of their annual emoluments as an exit package from January 1, 2026.

Walson-Jack said the measures, along with the Employee Compensation Scheme, are meant to improve workers’ welfare and ensure dignity in retirement amid rising living costs.
