Shock wave in Nigerian football as NFF President Ibrahim Gusau resigns

Ibrahim Gusau has officially stepped down from his role as the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF.

The outgoing sports administrator announced his immediate departure during a media briefing on Thursday in Abuja.

In a sweeping exit from the Glass House, several executive board members accompanied him in relinquishing their positions.

Addressing reporters at the conference, Gusau stated, “I just want to tell you that I decided to resign my position as the NFF President”.

He further revealed his directive to colleagues, saying, “I informed my board members and advised them that anybody who wants to follow me to also resign”.

Reflecting on the immediate fallout, he admitted, “But as I am talking to you I cannot tell you who and who or how many board members that have resigned”.

This sudden leadership collapse follows months of escalating public outrage and fierce pushback surrounding the administration’s management of domestic and national football operations.

Tensions reached a breaking point after the Super Falcons suffered a catastrophic failure to secure a spot at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The qualification collapse permanently ended a remarkable historical streak, as Nigeria had successfully featured in every single edition of the global tournament since its inception.

Adding to the administrative crisis, the men’s national team, the Super Eagles, recently suffered their own setback by missing out on back-to-back FIFA World Cups, failing to reach the 2026 edition.
