Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has officially confirmed that defender Cristian Romero will serve as the national team’s next captain.
The 28-year-old Tottenham star is set to inherit the armband once legendary playmaker Lionel Messi finally hangs up his international boots.
Scaloni revealed the major leadership transition ahead of La Albiceleste’s upcoming friendly matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso, and Benin.
The decision to appoint Romero represents a defining moment for the world champions as they prepare for a new generation of leadership.
“The captain is going to be Cuti,” Scaloni announced when confirming the squad’s future hierarchy.
“He was already the third captain after Leo and Ota,” the manager explained, referencing veteran central defender Nicolas Otamendi.
“There is Emiliano, who can also wear the armband,” Scaloni added, acknowledging the presence of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez alongside other senior leaders.
“Rodrigo, who will not be in these two games, can also wear it. Lautaro can wear it. Cuti is the right one,” he concluded, endorsing the tough-tackling defender as the natural choice for the job.
