The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC has been plunged into mourning following the death of its General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja.
Word of his passing was formally conveyed to members of the NLC National Executive Council, NEC during a meeting on Thursday.
NLC President Joe Ajaero personally broke the somber news by reading an official letter sent by the late scribe’s family.
Prior to his demise, Ugboaja occupied a prominent place in the union’s leadership as its fifth General Secretary.
The veteran trade unionist and seasoned lawyer officially assumed the administrative leadership of the NLC in August 2019.
Born on May 15, 1966, the late labour leader laid his academic foundation at the University of Calabar, where he earned his law degree in 1987.
Ugboaja built a distinguished career by bridging the legal profession with grassroots worker advocacy over several decades.
His trailblazing career set a historic precedent, with NLC official records confirming him as the very first Nigerian lawyer to commit to full-time service for a trade union.
