Remo Stars create unwanted NPFL history with shock relegation

Football can be a cruel game, and Remo Stars just learned that lesson in the most painful way possible. In a stunning twist of fate, the Ikenne-based club has officially been relegated from the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.

The drop marks a devastating low point for a team that entered the season with the highest of hopes, only to watch their campaign unravel week after week.

By confirming their demotion, the Sky Blue Stars have unfortunately written their names into the NPFL record books for all the wrong reasons by becoming the very first club in the history of the league to win the championship title and suffer relegation in the exact same follow-up season.

The final blow landed on Sunday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City as they needed a miracle on the final day of the 2025/26 season seeing Usman Abdallah’s men fought hard against Bendel Insurance but could only manage a 1-1 draw.

It was a gritty performance, but ultimately not enough to save them from the dreaded drop zone as the referee’s final whistle sealed their fate.

When the dust settled on a grueling 38-match campaign, Remo Stars found themselves sitting under the red line in 17th position. Despite scraping together 47 points over the course of the year, their inability to turn close games into victories ultimately doomed their survival hopes and cut their top-flight stay heartbreakingly short.

Remo Stars aren’t the only heavyweights saying goodbye to the top tier. They will be joined in the lower division next season by El-Kanemi Warriors, Bayelsa United, and Wikki Tourists, all of whom failed to secure enough points to stay afloat.

Sporting Lagos, Inter Lagos, Doma United, and the historic Ranchers Bees have all earned promotion from the NNL. They will step up to fill the empty slots next season, ready to inject fresh drama into Nigeria’s top-flight football league.
