The Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL has issued a strong warning to club coaches and officials against making public comments that could discredit referees or the league.

The warning was contained in a memo signed by NPFL Chief Operating Officer, Dr Ayo Abdulrahman, who reminded all clubs to follow the approved procedures when raising grievances.

The league’s directive follows a trending video interview involving Sporting Lagos head coach Jeffery Buter, who questioned the integrity of the centre referee after his side’s Matchday 6 clash against Barau FC in Lagos.

The NPFL stressed that its 2026/27 Framework and Rules prohibit players, coaches and club officials from publicly criticising or making disparaging statements against the league and its officials.

The memo cited Appendix B, Rule 7 and Section A, Rule 5.5.2, warning that any further breach will attract appropriate disciplinary action.

NPFL: “Any further breach will attract appropriate disciplinary action in accordance with the NPFL Framework and Rules.”

The league says the directive is aimed at protecting the NPFL brand and preventing comments capable of damaging the competition or discouraging potential partners and sponsors.
