Politics: ADC distances itself from top politicians ahead of 2027 race

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has dismissed claims linking it to any specific political heavyweight ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The party said it remains open to all aspirants willing to contest under its platform.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, pushed back against suggestions that the ADC is being positioned for certain prominent figures.

He insisted that the party would not be pressured into making early commitments, especially on sensitive matters like zoning. “We will not be blackmailed into taking an early position. Zoning is under consideration, and discussions are ongoing at a strategic level, but I cannot disclose specifics at this time,” he said.

Abdullahi stressed that no aspirant has been endorsed by the party, including names already being speculated in political circles. He maintained that the ADC’s platform remains neutral and accessible to all interested contenders.

“Certainly not. People may hold their own views, but I can say categorically that this is no more about Atiku Abubakar than it is about Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, or anyone else interested in contesting under our platform,” he added.

He explained that the party’s focus is on building a broad-based and inclusive political movement, rather than advancing the ambition of any single individual. According to him, internal consultations are still ongoing.

The ADC spokesman noted that decisions on critical issues, including zoning arrangements, would be taken at the appropriate time. He emphasized the need for patience while stakeholders continue discussions behind the scenes.

Abdullahi also called on opposition groups to close ranks, warning that disunity could hand an advantage to the ruling party. He said a fragmented opposition would weaken democratic competition as the 2027 elections draw closer.
