Activist Aisha Yesufu has revealed that she turned down an offer to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives under the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, citing concerns over fairness and due process.
Speaking at a public lecture on citizens’ participation in governance at Veritas University, Abuja, on Thursday, Yesufu said she declined the ticket because about 20 aspirants had already purchased nomination forms and were participating in the selection process.
According to her, accepting the offer would have unfairly disadvantaged those who had invested time, money, and effort in pursuing the ticket.
Describing the situation as unjust, Yesufu said she could not support or benefit from a process she believed violated principles of fairness and accountability.
She emphasized that she would rather lose than gain political office through an unfair process, adding that she has always chosen to stand with ordinary people instead of seeking titles at any cost.
Yesufu also called on young Nigerians to play a more active role in politics, stressing that meaningful civic engagement should extend beyond voting during elections.
