The Oyo State Police Command has arrested two persons for allegedly spreading false information about a purported bandit attack in Lamini Community, Ido Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects, identified as Pastor Amos Joel Muyiwa and Mulikat Bashiru, are currently in police custody, according to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Olayinka Ayanlade.
The statement, made available to Ribsmedia on Monday, said the suspects deliberately circulated misleading information claiming that bandits had invaded Lamini Community and killed six people.
Ayanlade explained that upon receiving the report, the command immediately deployed patrol and tactical teams to the area to verify the claims.
However, investigations revealed that no such attack occurred and that the reported killings were entirely false.
According to him, an intelligence-led investigation, backed by forensic analysis, traced an incriminating voice note to Pastor Muyiwa, leading to his arrest.
Further findings showed that the false alarm originated from Mulikat Bashiru, who allegedly made the unfounded claim within the community. She was subsequently identified, tracked, and arrested by the police.
“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform members of the public that it has arrested two suspects in connection with the deliberate dissemination of false information alleging that bandits invaded Lamini Community in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State and killed six persons,” Ayanlade stated.
“The ensuing intelligence-driven investigation, supported by forensic analysis, traced the incriminating voice note to Pastor Amos Joel Muyiwa, who was subsequently arrested.
“Further investigations revealed that the false alarm originated from one Mulikat Bashiru, who had raised the unfounded claim within the community.
She was thereafter identified, traced, and arrested in connection with the matter.”
The police command urged residents to verify information before sharing it, warning that the spread of false reports could cause unnecessary panic and undermine public safety efforts.
