Kogi State delivered an outstanding performance at the 2026 North Central Chess Festival in Abuja, securing three gold medals.
The winning trio of Ichado Michael, Jeminiwa Bernice, and Muhammad Aisha excelled in their respective categories to bring national recognition to the state.
Reacting to the victory, the Kogi State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Hon. Aridaojo Monday Anyebe, praised the performance as a clear sign of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo’s commitment to youth and athletic advancement.

Hon. Anyebe noted that the chess team’s impressive showing directly reflects the governor’s passionate backing and strategic investments in local sports development.
Extending his gratitude to Governor Ododo for his steadfast leadership, the commissioner assured the state that his ministry remains dedicated to producing even more regional success stories.
The commissioner also applauded the winning athletes for their grit, urging them to stay focused while promising continuous government support throughout their athletic careers.
Special praise was reserved for Coach Innocent Ichado, whom Anyebe commended for his relentless devotion to building a world-class chess program within Kogi State. 
In response, Coach Ichado expressed deep gratitude to both Governor Ododo and Commissioner Anyebe, crediting the administration’s active backing for the team’s strong showing.
Looking ahead, Ichado promised that the squad will keep sharpening their skills to bring home even bigger titles in upcoming national and international tournaments.
