Unidentified gunmen have killed the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa.
The incident occurred along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Ofu Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.
According to a statement by the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Saliu Afusat, the attack happened around Ojuwo Olijo at about 5:00 p.m., when armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire indiscriminately at motorists.
The police said a blue Toyota Corolla was later found abandoned along the highway, with the driver, identified as Ishaq Yunusa, discovered dead inside the vehicle.
The command has launched an investigation into the incident, while security operatives are currently combing the surrounding forest in an effort to track down the attackers.
The body of the deceased has been evacuated to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy.
The Commissioner of Police, Naziru Kankarofi, ordered sustained security operations along the affected corridor and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.
The police urged motorists and residents along the route to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
