Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has opened up about his tactical decision to inject several fresh faces into the squad during recent outings at the Unity Cup and the international friendly against Poland.
Looking to test the depth of local talent, the tactician named eight home-based players to his roster for the Unity Cup invitational tournament.
The competition ultimately served as a launching pad for international careers, handing senior national team debuts to Femi Azeez, Owen Oseni, Arthur Okonkwo, and Rafiu Durosinmi.
Defensively, the coach continued his experimentation by giving Banik Ostrava’s Abdullahi Bewene his debut against Poland, while subsequently extending a late invitation to Genk’s Christian Akpan for the upcoming clash with Portugal.
At the heart of these wholesale changes is Chelle’s relentless drive to elevate the overall competitive standard and quality of the Nigerian national team.
Explaining the rebuilding strategy, Chelle noted, “We have analysed our game over the past year and have tried to bring in players who can help the team grow.”
The gaffer emphasized that minor fine-tuning is critical to future success, adding, “We need to improve because, for me and for everyone, it is often the smallest details that make the difference between being the best team and winning a trophy.”
