The University of Jos has taken the drastic step of shutting down its student hostels and ordering an immediate evacuation as security conditions in Plateau State take a turn for the worse.
In an official statement released Wednesday by Deputy Registrar Emmanuel Madugu, the institution cited a “near chaotic” atmosphere that has left the campus community on edge.
“In view of the general security situation in Jos… which heightened tensions and threatened the safety of students in the hostels, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya has directed the immediate evacuation,” the university announced.
To ensure the safety of the fleeing students, the state government has stepped in to provide a secure corridor for travel despite movement restrictions.
“The evacuation is facilitated by HE Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, who has provided transport services, fully authorised to carry out the assignment even within the curfew hours,” the statement added.
Local students were instructed to leave by Wednesday afternoon, while those traveling to distant states were scheduled for a coordinated departure early Thursday morning.
While the university remains under heavy guard to protect property, management is urging everyone to stay calm and wait for further updates as the situation evolves.
