Gas tanker explosion kills two, destroys properties on Lekki-Epe expressway

A gas tanker explosion in the early hours of Saturday claimed two lives along the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The incident occurred at Tera Ahmed bus stop in Sangotedo following a collision between a gas tanker and a tipper truck.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service said the emergency was reported at about 2:36 a.m., prompting a rapid response.

Fire crews from Lekki Phase II, Oniru, and Epe II stations were immediately deployed to the scene.

Authorities said a speeding 20-tonne tipper truck from the Epe axis rammed into a stationary 30-tonne gas tanker.

The tanker had reportedly stopped on the highway without pulling off the road.

The impact triggered a fire that spread to three warehouses and ten roadside shops, including a gym and generator house.

Firefighters eventually contained the blaze, preventing further damage to a nearby petrol station and other properties.
