Nigeria’s Falconets continued their impressive run at the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup on Thursday, defeating England 3-0 to secure a spot in the quarter-finals in Poland.
Tosin Rafiu, Janet Akekoromowei, and Mercy Mamudu all found the net in a commanding Round of 16 display that kept Africa’s hopes alive in the tournament.
The Falconets made a rapid start at the Stadion Miejski in Bielsko-Biała, taking the lead just eight minutes into the contest.
Rafiu produced a moment of individual brilliance on the left wing, weaving past the English defence before firing past goalkeeper Katie Cox.
England responded by enjoying the lion’s share of possession, but Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Christiana Uzoma, stood tall with key saves at crucial moments.
Uzoma first denied England forward Princess Ademiluyi with a brilliant reflex save before producing an even bigger moment from the penalty spot.
The Nigerian shot-stopper guessed correctly to deny the in-form Rachel Maltby, tipping her spot-kick onto the crossbar to preserve the lead.
Returning from the break with renewed intent, Nigeria doubled their advantage just two minutes into the second half as Akekoromowei smashed home a crisp left-footed volley.
England pressed for a lifeline, but Mamudu put the game completely out of reach in the 73rd minute, sealing a emphatic 3-0 victory.
The triumph completes a remarkable turnaround for Moses Aduku’s side, who began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Spain and a goalless draw against China before thrashing New Caledonia 10-1 to reach the knockouts.
The two-time tournament runners-up now head to Lodz on Sunday to face either host nation Poland or Colombia for a place in the semi-finals.
