President Bola Tinubu has directed the Federal Government to achieve 95 per cent National Identification Number, NIN enrolment coverage in Nigeria by December 2026.
The President gave the directive on Wednesday in Abuja during the 8th National Identity Day celebration.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, Tinubu said the Federal Government was developing the digital infrastructure needed to leverage Nigeria’s identity system for economic growth.
He said the theme of the celebration underscored the importance of connecting Nigeria’s digital ecosystem with the digital economy and broader economic development.
“Nigeria’s digital ecosystem must power Nigeria’s digital economy, and Nigeria’s digital economy must help power Africa’s economy. Our identity infrastructure will be a critical component of this ambition,” he said.
Tinubu said the government was working towards a system where a secure digital identity could be used to access online business, banking, welfare payments, healthcare, education and transportation services.
He added that the administration was accelerating efforts to establish a secure national system capable of protecting digital documents, electronic signatures and online transactions.
According to him, the system would enable Nigerians to securely sign documents online, verify the authenticity of government documents, and safeguard online payments and official government communications.
The President stressed that a robust national identity system remained essential to building a secure and inclusive digital economy.
