Olusegun laments Nigeria's consecutive FIFA World Cup miss

Russian-based Super Eagles forward, Olakunle Olusegun, has expressed frustration over Nigeria’s inability to qualify for the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Mexico, Canada, and the USA, stating that lessons have been learnt the hard way ahead of the next edition in 2030.

Olusegun, who featured for the Super Eagles in last year’s Unity Cup, noted that most players are unhappy that Nigeria has now missed two consecutive FIFA World Cups, describing the situation as disappointing, especially for the current generation of Eagles players.

Olusegun spoke with journalists after a novelty match between Kwara-based players and foreign-based players, which ended in a 4-3 penalty victory for the foreign-based team after a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

“It is disappointing again for the Eagles not to qualify for the World Cup. This is sad, and preparations for the next edition should start immediately,” he said.

The former ABS FC talisman also acknowledged the initiative of the organisers of the novelty match, which brought together players who passed through Kwara, stating that such a laudable initiative promotes unity and togetherness among them.

Also speaking, Greece-based Mubarak Gata applauded the organisers for fostering unity among players through the friendly match and urged them to sustain the initiative to make it bigger and better in future editions.

Kwara United goalkeeper Abdullahi Boje was the cynosure of the match after denying the home-based team victory with several fantastic and crucial saves.
