Lagos residents urged to remain vigilant against Ebola

The Lagos State Government has called on residents of Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe Local Government Areas to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures against Ebola Virus Disease, EVD as part of efforts to protect public health.

The call was made by the Permanent Secretary of Health District III, Dr. Monsurat Adeleke, who emphasized the importance of awareness and prevention in safeguarding communities from the deadly disease.

According to Dr. Adeleke, Ebola Virus Disease is caused by the Ebola virus and can lead to severe illness and death if not detected and managed promptly.

She disclosed that Health District III has intensified community sensitisation programmes aimed at educating residents and reducing the risk of infection across the affected areas.

She explained that Ebola spreads primarily through direct contact with the blood, saliva, vomit, and other bodily fluids of infected persons or animals.

To prevent transmission, residents were advised to avoid contact with sick individuals, dead bodies, and wild animals such as bats and monkeys.

Dr. Adeleke also urged the public to maintain good personal hygiene, regularly use hand sanitisers, and avoid consuming undercooked meat.

She stressed that public awareness and strict adherence to safety guidelines remain the most effective means of preventing the spread of the disease.

“Although there is no confirmed Ebola outbreak in Nigeria at this time, vigilance, prompt reporting, adherence to infection prevention measures, and community awareness remain essential to protecting lives and preventing the spread of the disease.

Health District III is working with relevant agencies to strengthen surveillance, public awareness, and emergency preparedness across Eti-Osa, Ibeju-Lekki, and Epe,” she stated.

The Lagos State Government reassured residents that it remains committed to monitoring the situation and strengthening preparedness measures to ensure the safety and well-being of the public.
