Stranded US athletes force one-day delay for AFN Commonwealth Games Trials

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN has pushed back the start of the national trials by one day to help stranded US-based athletes.

The three-day event at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Lagos will now run from June 21 to June 23.

AFN President Tonobok Okowa called an emergency board meeting to approve the schedule change after receiving appeals from the affected competitors.

Severe storms, flash flooding, and heavy rain caused massive flight cancellations across major US transit hubs like Atlanta.

Federation officials shifted the dates to give these key track and field stars a fair chance to compete for a spot on Team Nigeria.

The AFN asked local athletes who are already waiting in Lagos to be patient with the sudden delay.

Despite the travel chaos, the stranded athletes are doing everything they can to land in Lagos before the first starting pistol fires.
