A fire outbreak on Thursday destroyed property worth millions of naira in a building in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The incident occurred at about 3:56pm adjacent to Ile-Anu Wofem Church, behind the Industrial Training Fund, ITF in the Asa-Dam area of the metropolis.
The spokesman of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
According to him, the affected building comprised three-bedroom flats and a room-and-parlour self-contained apartment, with the fire destroying three bedrooms.
Adekunle said the fire had gained significant ground before firefighters arrived due to the late distress call.
He, however, noted that the prompt and professional intervention of the firefighters prevented the adjoining block of room-and-parlour self-contained apartment from being consumed by the inferno.
“Due to the late call to the fire service, the fire had already gained significant ground before the arrival of the firefighters.
“However, through their prompt and professional intervention, the firefighters successfully contained the inferno and saved the adjoining block of room-and-parlour self-contained apartment from being consumed by the fire,” he stated.
Adekunle disclosed that preliminary investigations suggested that the fire was caused by a power surge, which ignited combustible materials within the affected section of the building.
The Chief Fire Officer of the Kwara State Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, advised residents to ensure that their electrical installations are regularly inspected and maintained by qualified personnel.
He also urged members of the public to contact the fire service immediately whenever a fire is noticed, stressing that early notification would give firefighters a better chance of containing an outbreak before it escalates.
