The Ghana Football Association, GFA has confirmed the tragic death of Premier League forward Dominic Frimpong following a violent armed robbery on Sunday night.
The attack occurred as Berekum Chelsea FC was returning from an away fixture, marking a dark day for the sporting community in the West African nation.
According to a club statement, the team was intercepted by “masked men wielding guns and assault rifles” who opened fire on the vehicle.
The terrifying assault forced players and staff to flee the bus and seek cover in nearby bushes to escape the hail of bullets.
Ghanaian police reported that the incident took place around 10:30 p.m. local time along the Ahyiresu-Kwame Dwumor Sreso road in the Ashanti Region.
The 20-year-old Frimpong sustained severe gunshot wounds during the encounter and unfortunately passed away while receiving emergency treatment at a hospital.
In a detailed report, police also noted that another victim, George Owusu Afriyie, was robbed of 4,500 cedis during the coordinated highway ambush.
Expressing deep sorrow, the GFA described the event as a “huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole.”
The association paid tribute to the young athlete, stating: “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”
Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana Stars, had quickly become a key player for his new club, scoring two goals in thirteen appearances before his life was cut short.
