Prominent Nigerian skit maker and actress Maryam Apaokagi, widely known as Taooma, has credited her mother and the idiosyncratic behavior of African parents as the definitive muses behind her viral comedy content.
In a recent candid interview with TheCable, shared on X on Monday, the prolific creator explained that while she frequently encounters creative roadblocks, she consistently recharges by tapping into the rich comedy embedded in local households.
The content creator emphasized that her highly relatable sketches are largely born from observing the raw mannerisms, disciplinary tactics, and eccentricities of everyday African mothers.
Reflecting on her creative process, Taooma stated, “It’s not like I don’t run out of ideas, but I obviously recoup and rejuvenate.”
“One of the major sources of my ideas is my mum and daily African parents, what they do and how they do their stuff,” she continued, adding, “I just take the ideas and put my own spice on them.”
The media star firmly believes that family life serves as an endless repository of humor for any storyteller willing to look closely at the chaos of their upbringing.
Elaborating on this domestic comedy goldmine, she remarked, “If you sit down and think about what your mum does and everything, there are so many crazy things that they do.”
Beyond real-life observations, Taooma revealed that she curates her personal media diet with strict discipline, ensuring she only ingests material that sharpens her mind and pushes her artistry forward.
The actress confessed, however, that literature remains an uphill battle for her, laughingly revealing she has only just dipped her toes into James Clear’s famous self-help guide, *Atomic Habits*.
Detailing her strict intellectual consumption, Taooma noted, “I don’t just consume content anyhow. I consume things that I know would inspire me and things that are good for my brain.”
“I don’t really read books, I’m not going to lie to you,” she added playfully. “I just started reading *Atomic Habits*. I pray I finish it this year.”
Shifting focus to her fan-favorite character “Quadri,” the comedian pulled back the curtain to reveal that the rowdy persona was originally meant to be a fleeting, one-time appearance.
The character was initially designed as a quick filler for a corporate advertisement, but an enthusiastic surge of viewer appreciation convinced her to grant Quadri a permanent slot in her fictional universe.
“Quadri was actually a walk-past role. He was never meant to stay,” she recalled. “When I did Quadri, I realized people liked the character.”
In breaking down the psychology of the beloved character, Taooma explained that Quadri serves as a tribute to the notoriously stubborn and defiant spirit of young men hailing from Ilorin, Kwara State.
“Quadri is a regular Ilorin boy. They are very rebellious and don’t take nonsense. Everybody has a Quadri character in their life,” she observed.
Concluding the interview, the superstar stated that while she prides herself on weaving authentic Nigerian culture into her sketches, her most brilliant characters happen entirely by chance.
“I don’t sit down and say I want to pick a character from this place or that place. I just do it according to how it comes,” she concluded.
