Team Nigeria’s Rafiatu Folashade Lawal successfully defended her Commonwealth Games title in commanding fashion, breaking records on her way to winning gold in the women’s 58kg weightlifting event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, Ribsmedia reports.
Lawal produced a remarkable performance, lifting a combined total of 229kg to set a new Commonwealth Games record and comfortably finish ahead of the competition.
Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau won the silver medal with a total lift of 215kg, while Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam of India claimed bronze with 199kg.
The victory marked Nigeria’s third gold medal in weightlifting on Monday, following earlier triumphs by Edidiong Joseph Umoafia in the men’s 71kg event and Onome Didih in the women’s 53kg category.
With Lawal’s latest success, Team Nigeria has now won 10 medals at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, comprising six gold and four silver medals, further strengthening the country’s impressive campaign.
