The Kwara State APC governorship primary election scheduled for Thursday has been abruptly postponed to Friday.
State party chairman, Prince Sunday Fagbemi, confirmed the sudden shift after orders came down from the national leadership.
Fagbemi told reporters, “we don’t have details for the cancellation other than the fact that the team from the national office came and instructed that the election be held tomorrow.”
Just hours before the new kickoff, eight top aspirants pulled out of the race to back Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki.
Seriki, the preferred successor of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, secured their backing during high-stakes strategic meetings on Wednesday night.
Despite the official delay, eager voters—including large groups of physically challenged party members—flooded polling centers across Kwara Central early Thursday morning.
At Gambari Ward II, Abubakar Gobir, a visually-impaired voter originally from Sokoto State, stated that he was there “to exercise their civic right as loyal party members.”
Another visually-impaired voter, Rufai Yusuf, openly declared their camp’s loyalty, saying: “We are with our families to pay goodness with goodness, we are all here for Yahaya Seriki.”
Down in Kwara South, local party member Alhaji Adebayo Yakeen reported a complete absence of electoral officers at his station.
Adebayo told newsmen, “but we ordered ourselves to queue up, and we counted ourselves and have since sent the results to our leadership in the state,” though rival ward officers quickly urged journalists to disregard his claim.
