Federal High Court strikes out alleged fake presidential envoy's trial

Justice Mohammed Garba Umar of the Federal High Court in Abuja has thrown out the eight-count criminal charge filed against Adeniyi Adeyemi, who is accused of posing as the Director General of the fictitious Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council.

The judge terminated proceedings on Monday after the prosecution requested to withdraw the suit, paving the way to transfer the suspect to the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory for a fresh arraignment.

During the sitting, the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, formally moved an application requesting the complete dismissal of the case before the court.

Oyedepo explained that the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, personally reviewed the police case file and uncovered critical jurisdictional errors in the original charge sheet.

According to the prosecution chief, the documents Adeyemi allegedly forged while operating the bogus agency fall squarely under the legal jurisdiction of the FCT High Court rather than the Federal High Court.

Oyedepo confirmed to the presiding judge that a revised charge sheet has already been registered at the FCT High Court to ensure Adeyemi faces an “expeditious” new trial.

He urged the court to strike out the current suit as mandated by procedural law.

Defense attorney Ibrahim Angulu, SAN, raised no objections to the prosecution’s motion, prompting Justice Umar to formally discharge the charge sheet marked FHC/ABJ/CR/25/2025.

The 38-year-old defendant stands accused alongside two fleeing accomplices, identified only as Femi and Anu, on counts centering on conspiracy and document forgery.
