The South-West Zone of the National Association of Polytechnic Students, NAPS has fiercely condemned the murder of Ahmed Sekinat, a Higher National Diploma II student at ICT Polytechnic, Itori, Ogun State, following a violent armed robbery.
Sekinat, who was studying Marketing, tragically died from severe machete wounds inflicted during the assault, while several of her peers sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Reacting to the tragedy in a Tuesday press statement signed by General Secretary Musbau Mubarak, the student body labeled the deadly attack as “unfortunate and barbaric.”
In its statement, NAPS noted that the tragedy exposes the intensifying security threats facing campus communities, declaring: “No student should have to live in fear or lose their life while pursuing education. The protection of students remains a fundamental responsibility of government, security agencies and institutional authorities.”
The association expressed deep frustration over allegations that law enforcement officers failed to arrive promptly when the distress call was raised.
Highlighting this lapse, the group stated: “We are equally disturbed by reports alleging a delayed response from security personnel despite the emergency nature of the incident. If these reports are confirmed, such delay would represent a grave failure in the duty to safeguard lives. Prompt emergency response is essential and must never be compromised.”
To ensure accountability, NAPS urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Ogun State Government, and polytechnic management to launch a transparent and impartial investigation into the tragedy.
The student leadership outlined key demands including the immediate arrest of the perpetrators, boosted security sweeps around campus host communities, and seamless collaboration between police forces and local leaders.
Demanding systemic change, NAPS warned that “the continuous rise in security threats facing students is unacceptable,” while offering condolences to Sekinat’s family and asserting: “Justice for Ahmed Sekinat. Student Lives Matter. Safe Campuses Are Non-Negotiable.”
