Federal Capital Territory FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has directed the territory’s traffic authorities to stop car racing in residential neighborhoods following complaints that the activity poses a danger to residents and other road users.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, Wike said no formal complaint had previously been brought to his attention, but assured residents that immediate action would be taken after the issue was raised.
He noted that while some motorists may be racing to showcase the quality of newly constructed roads, public safety must remain the priority.
According to the minister, car racing should only take place in designated areas and not in communities where people live.
Wike stressed that individual rights have limits when they threaten the safety and lives of others, adding that the FCT Administration would not tolerate racing in residential districts.
However, he clarified that the restriction does not apply to highways, stating that the focus of the directive is to protect residents in populated neighborhoods.
