Organised labour has announced plans to begin negotiations for a new national minimum wage in July 2026.
Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC made this known during a joint press briefing on the sidelines of the 114th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
They noted that several state governors have admitted that the current N70,000 minimum wage is no longer enough to meet workers’ basic needs.
Despite this, labour leaders cautioned governors against announcing wage figures independently and insisted that due negotiation procedures must be followed.
The unions also called on the government to clear all outstanding gratuity arrears owed to workers.
They reaffirmed their commitment to engaging relevant stakeholders in the wage review process to push for better welfare and improved conditions for Nigerian workers.
