An Abuja Federal High Court has cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
This ruling comes after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, offered Jonathan a waiver to run as their sole candidate.
However, a critic named Johnmary Jideobi filed a lawsuit to block the former president from presenting himself to any political party.
The plaintiff explicitly asked the court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or publishing Jonathan’s name on the ballot.
He argued that under several sections of the 1999 Constitution, Jonathan is no longer legally eligible to hold the office of the president.
The lawsuit heavily questioned whether Jonathan’s previous time in office technically exhausts his constitutional term limits.
Delivering his judgment on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu dismissed those hurdles and ruled that Jonathan has every right to participate in the upcoming election.
