Eight passengers lost their lives after two speedboats collided in the waters off Tikoro near Cameroon.
The afternoon crash involved a W23 boat carrying 13 Nigerians from Ikang in Bakassi Local Government Area into Cameroonian waters.
It struck a second W23 vessel powered by twin Yamaha engines.
Local Cameroonian fishermen rushed to the scene and pulled five survivors from the water.
Rescuers later retrieved the eight drowned victims and brought their bodies to Simon Beach in Ikang.
Cross River State Police Spokesman, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed that Marine Police units are supervising family identification of the deceased.
“The Command is also liaising with relevant authorities and affected families as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” Akata said.
He added that the command will release further updates as more verified details emerge.
