Nigerian singer, Adekunle Gold, has revealed that genotype was a major factor in his decision to marry, following his disclosure that he is genotype SS.
The singer made this known during a recent episode of the One54 Podcast, where he spoke about his decision to find out his wife’s genotype before proceeding with their relationship.
Adekunle Gold said he would not have married his wife if she were AS or SS, regardless of their feelings for each other, citing concerns about the possible health implications for their children.
He said: “I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS or AS. Forget love. I don’t think it makes sense to bring a child into this world and they would be sickly.
“When me and my wife first met, the first thing I did was to know her genotype. She is AA. That was why I proceeded with the relationship.”»
Adekunle Gold has been actively advocating for sickle cell awareness since publicly revealing that he is genotype SS.
The singer married fellow Nigerian musician, Simi, in January 2019, and the couple have two children.
