JAMB warns universities against issuing admission letters to candidates

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB has issued a stern warning to Nigerian universities against issuing admission letters to candidates, stressing that the responsibility falls exclusively within the Board’s statutory mandate.

The Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, stated this while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja, which paid him a courtesy visit at his office recently.

The development was disclosed in JAMB’s weekly bulletin released on Monday.

According to Aina, JAMB is the only body legally empowered to issue official admission letters to candidates seeking admission into tertiary institutions across Nigeria, including universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

He expressed concern that candidates often assume admission letters issued by institutions are genuine once they receive documents purporting to offer them admission.

The registrar, therefore, urged universities involved in the practice to desist, noting that they also had a responsibility to ensure that affected candidates obtained the appropriate documents from the Board.

He further recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had expressly directed that all admissions be processed through the Central Admissions Processing System, CAPS, warning that any action contrary to the directive was illegal and invalid.

Consequently, institutions are not permitted to substitute their admission letters for the official JAMB admission letter issued after candidates have accepted their offers through CAPS.

Aina added that only admissions processed through the platform are recognised for mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps NYSC, among other purposes.
