NDLEA nets 1,860 suspects in Nine-Month Drug Sweep in Kano

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA in Kano State has apprehended 1,860 suspects, including 92 women, and confiscated over 5.4 tonnes of illegal narcotics between January and September 2026.

Agency records show that prosecutors successfully obtained 89 convictions and initiated 126 fresh cases over the nine-month stretch, with 135 matters currently pending before the Federal High Court.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, October 13, the command confirmed the seizure of 5,409.814 kilogrammes of various illicit substances, comprising Cannabis sativa, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heavy psychotropic drugs.

Officials emphasized that these massive numbers highlight both the magnitude of drug trafficking across Kano State and the agency’s unrelenting drive to enforce the law.

Outside of direct enforcement, the command’s Counselling, Treatment and Rehabilitation Unit carried out roughly 1,700 targeted interventions to aid individuals recovering from substance dependence.

The agency also conducted about 420 educational outreach sessions across local schools and public gatherings to warn residents about the dangers of drug abuse.

A tactical initiative named Operation Restore Order successfully destroyed nearly 35 active drug joints throughout the state, leading to the arrest of more than 300 suspects.

Executed under the explicit instructions of NDLEA Chairman Brigadier-General Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), the targeted push aimed to dismantle local supply lines and restore public safety.

In a separate action called Operation Sharar Mafaka, officers uncovered hidden underground tunnels and subterranean caves in the Rimin Kebe neighborhood that syndicates used to run clandestine operations.

Reflecting on the recent operations, Kano State Commander D.Y. Lawal stated, “the Command remains committed to protecting public health, enhancing community safety, and combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking” across the region.
