Federal Government tightens grip on vehicle importsThe Federal

The Federal Government has officially banned the importation of all vehicles, including used ones, that do not carry a valid certificate of conformity.

John Enoh, the Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, unveiled the strict new regulations Tuesday at a National Automotive Design and Development Council event.

The policy, a joint framework between the Standard Organisation of Nigeria and the Automotive Council, aims to sanitize the quality of cars entering Nigerian roads.

Under this new mandate, the government is enforcing a rigid “no certification, no entry” rule that applies to every single automotive product crossing the border.

Importers must now secure pre-shipment certification before their vehicles even begin the journey to Nigeria, or face immediate rejection at the ports.

Minister Enoh clarified that this isn’t a trial run but a permanent directive, warning that “no vehicle or automotive product shall be imported, cleared, registered, or licensed without valid certification.”

Any importer caught flouting these rules risks total seizure of their cargo and heavy legal sanctions as the government moves to enforce standard compliance nationwide.
